Success Academy is a charter school offering the top quality education to the less privileged children of New York since its founding in 2006 by Eva Moskowitz. In 2014, approximately 29% and 35% of kids in district schools within the region were considered proficient in English and Maths subjects respectively. In comparison to kids at Success Academy, the rates were 64% in English and a remarkable 94% in Maths. Presently, the institution has 41 schools and over 11,000 children.
Since its inception, Success Academy has accomplished a lot in the educational sector, and such can be attributed to its robust curriculum and qualified educators. For instance, kids in kindergarten are taught full period and experiment-based science on a daily basis. Most of other public schools do not teach science in kindergarten until middle school. This could be the reason why most of the 4th graders and 9th graders excel well in the 2014 state science exams.
Also, teachers at the institution incorporate experiential learning as opposed to theoretical knowledge to help the kids understand history. Besides the students also take part in several field studies annually and visit the New York’s museums and cultural centers. In addition to a focus on English and Maths subjects, the institution also offers additional training in arts such as music, playing chess, and computer coding among others. It is impressive that some of the students have won national awards particularly in the school’s debate and chess teams.
Success Academy also prepares its scholars well for the state examinations. They regularly administer practice exams after which the results are posted in the institution hallways. Educators are also ranked according to their students’ performance, which motivates them further. Some of the poorly performing kids are offered additional tutoring sessions on Saturdays so that they can catch up with the rest.
New educators at Success Academy attend a one-month training program. They teachers spend one-week attending seminars and get trained by participating in mock lessons. In the remaining weeks, the teachers work with the Charter school summer students under the guidance of school leaders. Returning tutors take part in a two weeks refresher course before they begin their classes to assist in sharpening their knowledge.
